Consultation Studies for the establishment of a GIS Unit and DSS Unit at the National Information Center (NIC), Yemen (May 2008 – December 2009)

Following an extended competitive tendering exercise, GISCON together with Consultancy Solutions Ltd. (CSL), an expert UK-based consulting firm, are delighted to have won a contract from the National Information Center (NIC), Republic of Yemen, for the conduct of two parallel consultation studies into the feasibility and implementation of two new NIC units.

The first is to be a Geographical Information Systems Unit (GISU), which will develop and host the Yemeni National Spatial Data Infrastructure (YNSDI). The second is to be a Decision-making Support Information Unit (DSIU) which will provide decision makers with all the supporting information they need - including Geographical information from the GISU - to enable high quality government decision-making.

In addition to CSL and GISCON, our team includes a world-class Decision Support Systems expert from University College London, and a leading Middle East GIS expert from Cairo. The contract started in early May in Sana'a, capital of the Republic of Yemen, preceded by preparatory work in Germany, UK and Cairo. During the contract, parties of client staff will be taken on a Reference Visit to similar units in Egypt, and will be provided with Workshop-style training including Decision Support Systems, GIS management and project management aspects, in preparation for the implementation of the two new units later. On current plans, the contract will be completed around February 2009, with the likelihood of implementation support work subsequently.
