Spatial data infrastructure (SDI)

All spatial data required for GIS analysis and processing should be made available quickly and efficiently, regardless of the format in which they exist and from which they originate. This is to be fulfilled through spatial data infrastructure (SDI), which involves the creation of framework of policies, standards, methods and tools that enables efficient sharing of existing data, services and resources.

Merging different content, methods and tools can only work well, if use is made of internationally available standards such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) (http://www.opengeospatial.org).

GISCON Consultants possess a solid experience in the planning, design and development of SDIs on various levels; from local enterprise systems up to national and regional SDI.

Workflow analysis

The secret to efficient solutions to current problems is, among other things, a detailed analysis of work processes. From work instructions, meetings protocols, oral agreements and job descriptions, an overall picture that reflects the significant flows of information and data could be made. Based on this picture, the optimizing potentials are driven.

In many cases, the used work processes don't always allow the optimum use of the functions of the technology and software products. The analysis conducted by an external specialist group can be a useful tool to identify weaknesses in existing work flows and approaches to give an efficient use of the GIS products.

System Design

Based on our solid experience, we provide for every GIS start-up or upgrade the appropriate consideration of existing work processes and IT structure. Without such experience by their side, organizations often end up with diverse overlapping GIS applications and oversized systems due to the various needs of the different departments. In an extreme case, each of these 'island systems' may have separate data storage, processing and analysis requirements and may exist in different format, coordinate systems and accuracy. Any data exchange between the departments of the same organization would inevitably cause time-consuming and costly overhead.

Just as for the introduction of GIS, the optimization of such 'island systems’ requires a comprehensive understanding of existing business requirements and related information flows and overall business processes. With expert knowledge from the fields of system design and integration, our consultants would help you to integrate new GIS concepts and technologies into existing IT structures promptly and safely. As independent consultants (we don’t sell any hardware or software), we would provide reasonably sized system with just the needed hardware components and software licenses for the efficient and effective functioning of your system.
